Catholic night prayers

Examen, contrition, and Hail, Holy Queen

Before sleep, many Catholics make the sign of the cross, look back over the day in an examen, confess their sins, rest in a psalm and the Song of Simeon, and close with Hail, Holy Queen.

In the Catholic Church the official prayer of the hours is the Liturgy of the Hours: Lauds in the morning, Daytime Prayer at midday, Vespers in the evening, and Night Prayer (Compline) before sleep. MyOratory's Catholic hours gather the traditional prayers that many Catholics say at these times.

The Sign of the Cross

In the name of the Father, and of the Son, and of the Holy Spirit. Amen.

A short examen

Pause after each line.

Remember that you are in the presence of God.

Give thanks for the gifts of this day.

Look back over the day. Notice where you met God, and where you turned away.

Ask forgiveness where it is needed, and grace for tomorrow.

The Confiteor

I confess to almighty God, to blessed Mary ever Virgin, to blessed Michael the Archangel, to blessed John the Baptist, to the holy Apostles Peter and Paul, and to all the Saints, that I have sinned exceedingly in thought, word, and deed, through my fault, through my fault, through my most grievous fault. Therefore I beseech blessed Mary ever Virgin, blessed Michael the Archangel, blessed John the Baptist, the holy Apostles Peter and Paul, and all the Saints, to pray to the Lord our God for me.

An Act of Contrition

O my God, I am heartily sorry for having offended thee, and I detest all my sins, because I dread the loss of heaven and the pains of hell; but most of all because they offend thee, my God, who art all-good and deserving of all my love. I firmly resolve, with the help of thy grace, to confess my sins, to do penance, and to amend my life. Amen.

From Psalm 4

In peace I will both lay myself down and sleep, for you, LORD alone, make me live in safety.

Psalm 4:8 (World English Bible)

The Song of Simeon

Now you are releasing your servant, Master, according to your word, in peace; for my eyes have seen your salvation, which you have prepared before the face of all peoples; a light for revelation to the nations, and the glory of your people Israel.

Luke 2:29–32 (World English Bible)

The Our Father

Our Father, who art in heaven, hallowed be thy name; thy kingdom come; thy will be done on earth as it is in heaven. Give us this day our daily bread; and forgive us our trespasses, as we forgive those who trespass against us; and lead us not into temptation, but deliver us from evil. Amen.

Glory Be

Glory be to the Father, and to the Son, and to the Holy Spirit, as it was in the beginning, is now, and ever shall be, world without end. Amen.

Prayer to the Guardian Angel

Angel of God, my guardian dear, to whom God's love commits me here, ever this day be at my side, to light and guard, to rule and guide. Amen.

Hail, Holy Queen

Hail, holy Queen, Mother of mercy, our life, our sweetness, and our hope. To thee do we cry, poor banished children of Eve; to thee do we send up our sighs, mourning and weeping in this valley of tears. Turn then, most gracious advocate, thine eyes of mercy toward us; and after this our exile, show unto us the blessed fruit of thy womb, Jesus. O clement, O loving, O sweet Virgin Mary.

℣Pray for us, O holy Mother of God.

℟That we may be made worthy of the promises of Christ.
